GTA V

I have chosen GTA V for many reasons, as i find it a good example to demonstrate the many stages of a lifecycle of a videogame. I have past experience in the GTA games, so this will help me towards understanding the game, also with the game being world-known there will be loads of information to research.

videogames case study outline

In preperation for section B: Institutions and Audiences you need to understand, and be an expert in, the lifecycle of at least one game.

Lifecycle of game:
Development/Production - how it was made, key technologies used, companies involved in the process, timescales, consoles it is playable on etc.
marketing - how the game was advertised and how we have heard of it, include links to all examples i.e trailers.
Distribution - how consumers could get hold of it.
Consumption/Exchange - how we gave our money in order to play it and how we played it, any interactivity elements, additional content, sequals, fan communities etc.

In addition - you need to have a clear understanding of the following key terms and how they relate to the games industry as a whole or particular games

  • Cross media convergence
  • Technilogical convergence
  • synergy
  • proliferation
  • Next generation technologies
  • viral marketing
  • guerilla marketing
  • Vertical intergration

NOTE: GTA V is a good 'live case study' but it isn't essential for you to use that game, you could case study any game that has been released in the last two years or one that will be released before March 2013.
